Hellenic Leopard 1A5 [Looking for photos]
« στις: Μαρτίου 02, 2007, 05:56:37 μμ »
Hi there!

While as for now I have been a cardboard modeller (one of my models, PZL P.8: http://modele-kartonowe.com/friendsdone/swinger_p-8/p8_3.jpg ), recently I felt an urge to go back to plastic modelling. I bought a Revell 1/72 Leopard 1A5 model and started looking for a nice painting scheme for it. After some time I have chosen the Greek scheme, as it is really cool, looks better than any other. In order to find good photos I have visited many English-language sites, such as Greekmilitary.net or Militaryphotos.net, but I had difficulties in finding enough pictures of a one particular machine, showing its every side. Fortunately I have found a link to this site, and in your gallery I have found quite a lot of fantastic photos of Leopards 1A5 (as well as melpas1013's construction report here: http://www.modelclub.gr/forums/index.php?topic=1282.135 ). My question is: have you got more such pictures, in particular showing the upper side of the tank? Of course if I finish the build, I will submit photos of my model here.

The additional question is: what colours (FS or Humbrol, Pactra etc.) does the Greek Leopard 1 camouflage use?

Best regards from Poland
Lukasz

Hello Lukas... I am very impressed that you have found your way thru our forum specially since Greek is the only language used...
Unfortunately there are no more available fotos in our hands of the upper side of the tank, but... the 25th of March, is our national indipedence day, and a parade will take place, so we will try to take more photos of what yu need. Until then tell me exactly what do you need, and I wlll take some close ups on my model to help you... The Greek Leos, came in two patterns. The 4color scheme you see on my Leo, and the old classic 3color German(might be Nederland) one. Nowdays, almost all of them in service come with the 4color one... I will find and give you the FS code tommorow morning, for the 4color scheme...

Nice to have you on board, njoy the ride...

Hello again,

Well, certainly it wasn't easy to find out what is going on here as everything was in Greek. Fortunately I have found the magic option changing the forum language to English - now I know at least where to find the "reply" button. ;-) Sorry for not answering so long, by the way. I had a lot of work last week.

Nevertheless I was thinking about your question. In fact the only thing which is insufficient for me in the photos you have submitted in the gallery is that these photos:
http://modelclub.gr/xoops/modules/xcgal/displayimage.php?pid=2720&album=164&pos=65
http://modelclub.gr/xoops/modules/xcgal/displayimage.php?pid=2721&album=164&pos=66
are the only ones depicting the engine cover and the top side of the turret, and it is hard to find the borders between colours on them. As for the engine cover, it is not that bad and I think I see the colours well enough (and you've painted your model basically the same as I think). But I can't see the top of the turret - did you use this photo to paint your model? Or maybe your memory? ;-) Are the colours better visible on the original photo?

Well anyway, I can paint my model basing on the existing photos and the photos of your model - it is still very good reference, but IF it was possible and IF it really wasn't a problem and IF you were so kind, I would be delighted to get the tank shown with its every side, I mean front, rear, left, right, engine cover, top side of the turret from front and rear, and the upper side of the place where the driver sits.

Are the sides (I mean - behind the wheels) always green, as on your model?

Of course I would like to paint my model with the 4-colour scheme.

Check this out...
Ι believe my model is quite right concerning the scheme. I will take some photos of my model to help you and give you the colors you will need. In exactly 2 weeks, we will try to take as many photos as possible, but this depends also on the conditions we will face before the parade... I'll be back with you in half an hour with model-photos...

Dear Lucas,
as a former Leopard tank commander, i can certify that there not any clear colour borders at leopard's upper surfaces.
Tanks on parades, have been cleaned and polished the day before.
So get an idea on the scheme and prepare yourself to make a very dusty model

Best regards,
John Ramfighter

Thank you mates. Lots of dust, yes, definitely. Of course, unless the model is put on a diorama showing Independence Day parade, with 1/72 Melpas taking photos. ;-)
