As a final observation, I 'll just add the following :
one point that has been put forward in favour of white outline for 3.Kp Tigers of SS101 in Normandy is that because this Kompanie used plain white numbers when in Mons in early 1944, then the numbers were simply filled with blue leaving just a thin white outline as it was argued there was no point in taking the time to paint the outlines in yellow.
Now a lazy bugger like me can see some logic in this, but then again we should also perhaps look at it in a diffrent way :
contrary to what 's been stated sometimes, photographic evidence suggest the 3.Kp Tigers left Mons with plain white turret numbers still since several of these can be seen being loaded and entrained in Mons as they were making their way to Northern France.
The Battalion was fully equipped in late April 1944 only, that is when it received its last batch of Tigers to fit both the 2.Kp and 1.Kp.
My guess, based on deductive logic only (for waht it's worth), is that it is only then that the definite turret numbers were painted on ALL the Tigers, regardless of the Kompanien they belonged too.
