Hi everyone,

I know, a little bit late, but work is going before fun :-)
Enjoy reading, and please excuse the sometimes bad english. I hope
you understand everything!

HAF - Open Days 2006

Explanations:

· Serials without any marking, where read by ourselves
· Serials with *, where assumed from older logs, pictures on
the internet, etc..
· -//-, means that the serial is unknown, and therefore we
would appreciate, if someone could help us with them!!!
· Serials with #, means that the planes had a covered cockpit
hood.

DAY 2: Wendnesday 08. November 2006

The first day of the celebrations. We had a few problems, because
they couldn΄t understand, why it was not enough for us to photograph
one CL-415, and it was necessary for us to take pictures of all
five :-)

The pilots of the Canadair΄s told us, that effective from November
9th, the 383MEEA is transferred from Elefsina to Thessaloniki- Mikra.

After 1 hour, we leaved and make our way to our next stop, Larisa.
On the way there we stopped in Katachas for the C-47 cafe! The plane
is easily to see from the highway, on the right side. Take the first
exit (N. Agathoupoli) after you see it and then again right, and
after 5 minutes you are there.

Katachas

49-2641* C-47 Hellenic Air Force On roof of a bar;
All white with "CAFE DC-3" titles

Then we continued for Larisa. I must say, the roads have improved
very and the highway is in a excellent condition with very little
traffic. So no problems at all!

The easiest way, to find the Airbase in Larisa, is to take the exit
shortly after the industrial zone. After about 12 km you are in the
city. You continue through the city, and you will see the apron of
the airport on your left side, exactly when you are on top of a
bridge. After the bridge you must take the first to the left and you
are at the gate.

When you are driving through the base to the apron with the static
excibits, you are passing the small museum. Unfortunately, they
forbid us to take any pictures there ...

Except of this, in Larisa the people where much more relaxed then in
Thessaloniki. We had no problems with taking pictures. In the time
we were there, we were lucky enough to see 2 F-16 arriving back from
a mission and passing beside the static.

In the background along the runway, (7?)x F-4E and (3?)x RF-4E where
vissible. But unfortunately, to far away to identify them …

After having a very nice time here, we leaved Larisa for our last
destination this day, Nea Anchialos. Still in Larisa, if you take
the road from the gate and go street ahaid into the city, you will
pass on your right side, the ATA HQ. Here you can see from the road,
the following preserved planes:

ATA HQ

6668* F-104G Hellenic Air Force Silver c/s
89083* F-5A Hellenic Air Force Hellenic Flame c/s

It takes about 1 hour from Larisa to Nea Anchialos. The airport is
out-described, and so easy to find.

In Nea Anchialos we expected a little more traffic. There was any
traffic at all! And unfortunately, they didn΄t allow us to take
pictures of the three F-16 in the hangar ...

Day 3: Thuersday 09. November 2006

Today was to be a special day, because we visit Araxos, where the
last active A-7 in the world are based :-)

Araxos (LGRX/GPA)

In Araxos we had at beginning big problems with one particular
security guy. He wouldn΄t allow us to take pictures. Fortunately,
after a short discussion with the security responsible for the base,
it was any more problem :-)

During our stay in Andravida, we saw 2x TA-7 (maybe the same
practising touch & go΄s as later?) and 2x F-4 (the same like
before?) departuring, 1x TA-7 towed away from the static and 1x F-4
in GAF lizzard c/s standing between the static apron and the runway
(someone the serial?).

As we passed Araxos, on our way to Aigio, we saw 2x TA-7C practising
a few touch & go΄s at Araxos.

was supposed to be there. After having a little bit difficulties :-)
to find him, finally we managed to photograph him.

Aigio

After this, we continued our way to Athens. Shortly before Athens,
we saw from the highway the Army Airport of Megara. On the apron
were 9x UH-1H/AB-205A and 9x CH-47.

After a short bypass at Elefsina, where we saw one P-3B LW
departuring, one on the apron, the CL-215 1112 wreck, 2x C-130 and
the preserved C-47A 49-2626, we arrived finally at our hotel, near
the railway station.

After Eleusina, because we had time, we decided to visit the old
Athens-airport. On the road there, shortly after the "Friendship &
Peace"-Stadium, in Paleo Faliro, the Air History Service of the HAF
is layed. In the garden there are preserved the following two
aircrafts:

Paleo Faliro

134 Mirage F-1CG Hellenic Air Force
92751 T-6D Hellenic Air Force

After this we continued to the old airport. There are stored/dumped,
only civil aircrafts. On the northeast side of the airport is
located the KEA. They have a large number of stored/dumped F-104, T-
33, etc.. Unfortunately, they didn΄t allow us to take a look ...

A few hundred meters further down the main road along the coast to
the south. the H.C.A.A HQ is located. Preserved in front is the
following Dakota:

Day 6: Sunday 12. November 2006

In the morning a Kuwaiti C-130 made a low fly over our hotel.
Unfortunately, we were not able to read the serial …

After this, we searched for 97175, a F-5A, that should be displayed
at Platis Ikaron in Faliro. But, there is no Platia Ikaron in
Faliro! After 3 hours search in Athens, we decided to go back to the
hotel …
After our return to Germany, we learnt, that the F-5 must be at
Platia Iroon, near the Air History Service of the HAF. So, I hope we
have next time more luck :-)

Day 7: Monday 13. November 2006

Today we returned to Thessaloniki.

First stop was made in Lamia. Here a F-5A is preserved near the city
entrance (when you are coming from Athens), by the Exhibition Center.

Lamia

10577 F-5A (G) Hellenic Air Force Aegean Blue c/s; ex
RNoAF

Shortly after Lamia, there is a F-5A "preserved" in a park in
Stylida. The park is on your left side, when arriving from Athens, a
few meters after the village entrance. Unfortunately, the plane is
in a very bad shape. Many items are missing.

Stylida

89063 F-5A Hellenic Air Force Desert/SEA c/s

The plane has a interresting camo c/s. It is Desert camo combined
with SEA camo!

After Stylida we continued to Volos. Bypassing Nea Anchialos, we saw
2x F-4E (AUP) landing and (4?)x F-16C on the base. Maybe someone
the serials?

In Volos there is also a F-5A preserved. We made the mistake and
entered the city from the new highway entrance at the north
(Velestino). From here on, it is little bit confusing to find the
plane.

But so, we managed to see 2x AH-64 making a low fly over our heads :-
)

Volos

-//- AH-64A Hellenic Army 1TEEP, Stefanovikio
-//- AH-64A Hellenic Army 1TEEP, Stefanovikio

The best way to find the F-5 is, to enter the city from the south.
Take the exit to Mikrothives, and shortly before you arrived at the
harbor, you will see the F-5 on your right hand.

69228 F-5A (G) Hellenic Air Force Aegean Blue c/s; ex
RNoAF

When your take the first exit to Larisa, coming from Athens, and
continue through the town, shortly before you join again the
highway, you see on your left side the factory of "Soukas Robotics".
They have a very nice preserved UH-19 as gate guard.

Outside Larisa

13930* UH-19B Hellenic Air Force No markings

After Katherini, we decided to look after the T-6 and F-5, described
in W&R 3rd Edition, as present in Veria. Unfortunately, there is
nothing like a War Museum in Veria!!! Nobody we asked, had heard
anything about planes in the city.

After this misfortune, and because it was getting dark, we decided
to bypass the preserved F-5A at the War Museum in Thessaloniki, and
continue to our hotel at the airport.

Day 8: Tuesday 14. November 2006

The Canadair΄s where still standing on their place. Noteworthy was
the touch % go΄s of the C-47A 49-2622, and the moving of the
following F-5A from the small apron, left of the gate, to somewhere
more inside the airbase.

Thessaloniki- Mikra (LGTS/SKG)

49-2622 C-47A Hellenic Air Force 355/1MTM, Thessaloniki- Mikra

Also the T-2E 160077 was leaving for Kalamata. In the afternoon a C-
27J Spartan landed and after a very short time leaved  again.
