Confused about Mig-29 colors http://www.cybermodeler.com/aircraft/mig-29/mig-29_profile01.shtmlHS features reference...
regarding camouflage colors – they call for mixage of Revell paints without any reference to other brands or FS codes. Instructions also describe three tone camouflage for Russian plane (grey+grey-green on upper surfaces, lighter gray on undersurfaces) which I have fund no evidence of being true – my references were mostly listing light grey overall with grey-green camouflage on upper surfaces. The reason might be that pictures of real plane sometimes look to have different colors due to sun fading, dirt or generally weathering, but theoretically I have also no evidence against three-tone camouflage. Finally I decided to stick to my references and I went for two tone camouflage.
Model Master paints were used -
USSR Fulcrum Gray a
USSR Fulcrum Gray-Green. They are semi gloss, very good for airbrushing and in my opinion they represent the Russian tones very well.
ARC reference...
Dark Gray FS 36118 (radome)
Blue gray FS 35327 (top camo)
Light gray FS 36375 (whole underside AND top camo)
These translate into modelMaster acrylics of
Gunship Gray
Grayish Blue (Gunze is closest?)
Light Ghost Gray
On a CAM decals sheet, paints called for are:
: 3tones?
Ghost grey 36373 top camo
Grey green 35352 top camo
Light gray 26493 undeerside
Dark Gray FS 36118 (radome
Going through the Unveiled Secrets MiG-29 disc, they suggest
Humbrol 145 as the lighter grey (which they ref. as
FS 35237), and a
50/50 Hu.149 and
32 for the darker grey (35352). And yes, it is a two-tone scheme. Di-electric panels are FS 36231.
However, they also stress that the colours change, quite drastically, from weathering, and may differ from the start based on the manufacturer. They suggest their Humbrol matches are quite good for a new machine, but to tweak your paint based on references. In fact, they give different FS matches for some camouflages, to simulate older paint.
The best match for a factory-fresh Russian Fulcrum would be the colors made by Testors:
Fulcrum Gray and Fulcrum Gray/Green. These are matched to
FS 26440 and FS 24233 (both semigloss)
However the colors seem to change rather quickly because of weathering and poor paint maintenance: the gray/green being the worst affected, fading to a bluish gray. This is the reason for so many "versions" of the Fulcrum colors.
